Stocksbridge gears up for Le Tour!

On Monday 9th.December, a vision meeting occured at Stocksbridge Town Hall. Chaired by Nigel Owen, a diverse group of 13, representing many aspects of life in the Valley (Cycling, Stocksbridge Rugby Club, the King and Miller, sports development, the Lunch Box, events team, walkers, In Bloom ..... and more) discussed the opportunities offered by the forthcoming visit of Le Tour. Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre

Earlier this afternoon, Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre was formally opened by coach Glyn Rhodes MBE and light middleweight boxer, Sam Sheady. In addition to the official opening, thousands of visitors were entertained by sporting demonstrations, the Christmas Fayre, Santas Grotto, the mobile climbing wall and music from a variety of local bands. Christmas Market and lights

Come along to see the switch on of the Christmas lights and visit Stocksbridge Christmas market on Manchester Road at 6-00pm on Friday 6th December.  Stalls, reindeer and an appearance by Father Christmas.

SCLC - OPENING EVENT ON SUNDAY!

From 12 noon on Sunday 1st.December, Glyn Rhodes MBE will be officially opening the centre before a boxing bout with Sam Sheady, Northern Area Champion. Table Tennis champion Will Bayley, Team GB Paralympic Silver Medalist will show the kids how its done. Peak Pursuits will be there with their mobile climbing wall. There will also be Christmas Stalls, Santa's Grotto, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Green Top Circus, Face Painting, free taster sessions including Bowling, Trampolining, Karate and fitness sessions with Active Health Sheffield and lots more.

Tour de France 6th July 2014  A sub group of the Stocksbridge Events and 4SLC Teams are meeting on Monday 18th.November and on the 9th.December to at the Town Hall from 1900 to discuss all the possibilities of promoting the Town, including the introduction of our fantastic community , with all its community groups, leisure facilities, pubs clubs and businesses, not just the day of the race but during the 100 days leading up to the event.

Woodhead rail tunnels to be sealed

Transport Minister Stephen Hammond has made the decision not to buy the Woodhead tunnels, between South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, from owners National Grid. The two Victorian rail tunnels are to be sealed.  source: BBC News

Le Tour à pied

Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome have produced a 14.5 mile walk, 'Le Tour à pied,’ which runs approximately parallel to the route of Le Tour from Langsett to High Bradfield. This is available to download. A limited number of 12 page A5 booklets are also available, at no cost, from local outlets. 

Successful Valley in Bloom Schools’ Planting

Valley in Bloom Schools’ Planting 23rd October 2013 The six large square containers on the precinct, each sponsored by one of the six schools in the town, have now been planted with violas and spring bulbs. The pupils came, accompanied by members of staff, to complete the task on Wednesday afternoon of last week. Because of the heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday, planting was doubtful, but after a wet morning the sun came out and the planting went ahead.

Stocksbridge and Deepcar Firework Diplay

The annual November fireworks display at Parsonage Farm (Deepcar S36 2UT) is planned for next Saturday (2nd.November).  The fire will be lit at 18:30, fireworks will commence about 19:00. The bonfire and the event is staged by Deepcar Village Community Association and volunteer helpers. Fireworks are purchased with a grant from Stocksbridge Town Council.  Donations of  wood for the fire are wanted. The organisers have little transport and available manpower to assist. Please take any wood you can to the fire site on the field.

Le Tour route finalised!

The full final route of the Tour de France Grant Départ 2014 was officially made available earlier to-day. Le Tour travels from Leeds to Harrogate on Saturday 5th.July, then from York to Sheffield on Sunday 6th. July 2014 - the 'Stocksbridge loop' is as predicted - Langsett/ Midhopestones/ Mortimer Road/ Penistone Road/ High Bradfield. The route then goes on to Oughtibridge and Grenoside before looping back into the centre of Sheffield.

4SLC Race Night

New family support project looking for volunteers

CSV (Community Service Volunteers) is recruiting volunteers in Sheffield for its new Volunteers Supporting Families (VSF) project. Funded by the Department for Education, the Sheffield project is the first of seven new projects to open across the country and is run by Project Co-ordinator Rachael Eyton and Project Manager Terry Lowell.

Emergency First Aid at Work Course

The Venue in Stocksbridge is offering an accredited Emergency First Aid at Work course for members of local Voluntary and Community groups. All places must be booked in advance and we require a £10 deposit to confirm your place. This course is being offered at a reduced rate and some of the proceeds will be donated to a local voluntary group. The cost is £35 and includes a certificate.

Blood Donors

Are you a blood donor? The Sheffield Blood Service is holding two blood donation sessions at The Venue in Stocksbridge on Thursday 24th October.  Please see our Events section for details. New bus timetables from Sunday 27th.October

New 57 and SL1 bus timetables commence on Sunday 27th.October. In the evening, the 57 bus will stop at Oughtibridge and the SL1 will be extended to visit Garden Village. The new timetables are available from Travel South Yorkshire. 

Window Dressing in Stocksbridge

Earlier this week, City Dressing transformed the frontage of three closed shops on Manchester Road. Funded by Sheffield City Council, the displays include, courtesy of Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome, details of 24 local walks. 

Launch of Community website

The new version of the Stocksbridge Community website www.stocksbridgecommunity.org will be launched on Saturday 5th October at The Hub Church in Stocksbridge.  Please come and join us between 10-00am and 12-00 for a free coffee and a look at what the website can offer local groups and businesses. Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre to Open

Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre Opens Its Doors On Monday 30th September -  After three months of hard work by 4SLC members and a huge number of volunteers, the leisure centre will open its doors once again to those groups who previously used the centre. We welcome back the bowlers, the badminton players, footballers, gymnasts, martial arts, trampolines and the radio car club. The centre will fully open on 2nd.January 2014. We will publish our programme of activities in December.

Volunteers needed at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre

Half of Sheffield's libraries facing axe

More than half of Sheffield's libraries could shut within two years. Stocksbridge Library is seen as one of the 12 "key" libraries which would be retained under proposals from Sheffield City Council. A further five would become "community-led" libraries, receiving guaranteed council funding for two years, while 11 would become "independent" facilities. The 12 "key" libraries would be open six days a week.

Changes in bus service to Stocksbridge

The recent proposal that, on the 57 route, evening and Sunday journeys would operate between City and Oughtibridge only, with Supertram links service SL1 extended to Stocksbridge at these times, is to be implemented.

Steel Valley Partnership Anniversary

Steel Valley Partnership are currently running a successful series of events to celebrate the 25 years anniversary since it was established. As part of these events, SVP led a walk with Walkers are Welcome on Sunday 8th.September. New £40m motorway service station on the M1 in South Yorkshire?

Plans have been unveiled for a new £40 M  service station on the M1 in South Yorkshire. A 20-acre (eight hectare) site at junction 35 near Chapeltown, which is largely woodland, has been chosen. A number of groups have spoken out against this proposal as the area chosen is ancient woodland - comments include:

Plans have been unveiled for a new £40m motorway service station on the M1 in South Yorkshire. A 20-acre (eight hectare) site at junction 35 near Chapeltown in Sheffield, which is largely woodland, has been chosen. Extra Motorway Service Area (MSA) Group said there was a need for services there as drivers were having to go up to 42 miles without the chance to stop.

Oughtibridge pavilion reopens after six-year wait

Oughtibridge pavilion has reopened after a £200,000 renovation project. The club house at Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club, near Station Lane, was left unusable after the River Don broke its banks in June 2007. Building work at the pavilion began in March 2012. Work was funded by a Sport England grant of £62,000 and £136,000 from the club's funds.
