73.8% of Sheffield's street trees were mature when the £2.2bn "Streets Ahead" highway maintenance project began, in August 2012. On 9th March 2018, in response to a demand by the Information Commissioner, Sheffield City Council (SCC) released a redacted version of the PFI contract for the project (awarded to Amey). It reveals that SCC have set a target for the contractor (Amey) to FELL 200 MATURE STREET TREES PER YEAR with a total of 17,500 TO BE FELLED over a 25 year period (67.6% of mature street trees).

From 22nd until 27th September the Hub on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge will be hosting the 'Stocksbridge Energy Future' exhibition. The aim of the event is to explore the potential for generating energy from renewable energy resources in the Stocksbridge area. The exhibition explores how renewable energy is currently used in the valley. It also explores how different technologies could be used to produce more energy locally. At the exhibition you can see a wonderful model of the valley made by the Sheffield University's architecture department.

Steel Valley Project nominated for award

The Steel Valley Project has been nominated for an award from Lloyds Bank Community Fund and has the chance to win up to £3,000. If we win, the money will be used to remove barriers to people who want to improve their local environment, as well their own prospects, by helping manage green spaces in North Sheffield. The award will help people access high-quality training and volunteering opportunities for the benefit of local communities and nature. We need your votes to get us to the finals!

Quad bikes in Wharncliffe Woods

There seems to be a recent upsurge in the illegal use of high powered motorised vehicles in Wharncliffe Woods, especially quad bikes. This is causing increasing danger to both horse-riders and walkers. Access seems to be via either close to (the long closed) Deepcar station or via Wraggs bridge onto Moor Hall Tip and then into the woods. Various barriers have been destroyed. In addition a number of gates on Wharncliffe Heath have been damaged and stock has escaped.

60th Anniversary of the opening of Britain's first electrified inter-city railway commemorated by Don Valley Railway's Electrifying Ale Campaigners wishing to see passenger trains into Sheffield Victoria once again are commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the electrification of the Woodhead Rail Route - Britain’s first all electrified inter-city main line – by producing a beer and a booklet, with help from one of Sheffield many fine real ale micro-breweries.

Stocksbridge on Industrial Heritage Route

An industrial heritage trail linking five sites across South and West Yorkshire has been unveiled -  a new European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), one of 15 across the continent, the 'Makers, Miners and Money' route includes Sheffield's Kelham Island Museum, the Elsecar Heritage Centre, in Barnsley, and the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield.

New App for The Hub Food Bank

There is an app to help support food banks across the UK which can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store. Once downloaded, choose your local Foodbank (The Hub Stocksbridge) from the list and the app will automatically update itself with the information from your selected Foodbank. The shopping list is updated regularly by the local Foodbank team and highlights those items most needed. About Foodbanks... 1 in 5 people are living below the poverty line in the UK.

Leisure Centre Raft Race

4SLC (Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre) is trying to raise much needed funds for the wet side to try and open the pool. This event had 12 teams last year and this year only 4 teams have currently signed up. 4SLC desperately need your help to get involved and are asking if you can get a team together and support the centre. There should be 6-8 people per team at the cost of £120.00 entry fee (£20 each for a team of 6, £15 each for a team of 8) which split between all of the team is not a lot of money to raise to help support this event.
